These lighter mummy jalapeño popper crescents are a fun, flavorful Halloween appetizer made with reduced-fat crescent dough, Neufchâtel cream cheese, and fresh jalapeños. They’re quick, easy, and perfect for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (8 rolls) reduced-fat crescent roll dough
  • 4 ounces Neufchâtel cream cheese, softened
  • 3 medium fresh jalapeños, sliced into 12 thin rounds
  • 1/4 cup shredded reduced-fat mozzarella cheese
  • 2 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • Optional: flaky sea salt or black sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a small bowl, combine softened Neufchâtel, mozzarella, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Mash with a fork until smooth and well-mixed.
  3. Slice jalapeños into thin rounds, about 1/8-inch thick. Remove seeds and membranes for less heat. You’ll need about 12 slices total.
  4. Open the can of crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles along perforated lines. Lay flat on a clean surface or parchment-lined pan.
  5. Place a heaping teaspoon of the cream cheese mixture at the wide end of each triangle. Spread slightly, leaving a small border. Top with 3 jalapeño slices. Roll the crescent up from the wide end toward the point, stopping halfway. Wrap the remaining dough around the roll like a bandage, leaving a small opening at the top for the ‘face.’
  6. In a small bowl, whisk egg and water together. Lightly brush the top of each mummy with egg wash. If desired, press two black sesame seeds or tiny dots of black pepper into the exposed cheese filling for ‘eyes.’
  7. Bake on the middle rack for 12-15 minutes, until golden brown and filling is bubbly.
  8. Let rest on the pan for 2-3 minutes before transferring to a serving plate.

Notes

For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cream cheese mixture. To make ahead, assemble up to 4 hours in advance, cover, and refrigerate. Add egg wash just before baking. For freezing, assemble unbaked mummies, freeze on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen, adding 2-3 minutes to the baking time.
