Quick and easy Halloween snack made with puff pastry wrapped around sausages to look like mummies. Perfect for parties and guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 8 cocktail sausages or 4 regular sausages, cut in half
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 16 mustard seeds or black sesame seeds
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Flour, for dusting
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Grated cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Ketchup or mustard, for dipping (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 200°C (400°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Lightly flour work surface. Unfold puff pastry and roll out slightly to smooth creases, about 3mm thick.
  3. Cut pastry lengthwise into strips about 1cm (½ inch) wide (12-14 strips).
  4. Place a sausage at the end of a pastry strip and wrap at a slight angle, overlapping slightly. Leave a small gap at the top for the face.
  5. Arrange wrapped sausages on prepared baking sheet, leaving about 2cm (1 inch) space between each.
  6. Press two mustard seeds into the exposed sausage at the top of each mummy for eyes.
  7. In a small bowl, beat egg with milk. Brush egg wash over pastry strips only (not the exposed sausage).
  8. Bake for 15-18 minutes until pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  9. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before serving.
  10. Serve warm or at room temperature with dipping sauce.

Notes

Use pre-cooked sausages to ensure they cook through. Don’t overwork the pastry; keep it cold for best puff. Egg wash helps strips stick and gives golden color. Let cool 5 minutes before eating to avoid burns.
