This rich and creamy crockpot hot chocolate is infused with peppermint and can be spiked to your liking. Perfect for holiday gatherings, it’s a set-it-and-forget-it treat that’s sure to warm you up.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup crushed peppermint candies or candy canes (for garnish)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup peppermint schnapps (optional, for spiking)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup dark rum or bourbon
  • For serving: whipped cream, additional crushed candy canes, chocolate shavings

Instructions

  1. In your crockpot, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt until no lumps remain.
  2. Slowly pour in the milk and heavy cream, whisking continuously to combine.
  3. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Do not cook on HIGH.
  4. About 30 minutes before serving, stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Taste and adjust mint if desired.
  5. Whisk again just before serving to recombine any separated cream.
  6. Ladle into mugs. Set out the peppermint schnapps (or other alcohol) so guests can add their own.
  7. Top each mug with whipped cream, crushed peppermint candies, and chocolate shavings if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and canned coconut cream. If you don’t have peppermint extract, simmer a few peppermint tea bags in the milk for 10 minutes before adding other ingredients. Do not cook on HIGH to avoid scorching the milk. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stove or in the crockpot on LOW.
