These adorable mummy pigs in a blanket are a quick and easy Halloween appetizer made with flaky puff pastry, smoky little smokies, and funny mustard eyes. Perfect for parties, they come together in under 30 minutes and are a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14 oz) Little Smokies or similar smoked sausages
  • 1 sheet (about 10x10 inches) frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • Optional: Everything bagel seasoning or flaky sea salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line your baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, gently unfold your thawed puff pastry sheet. Use a rolling pin to gently roll it out to about a 12×12 inch square.
  3. Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into thin strips about 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide and about 4-5 inches long.
  4. Take one little smoked sausage and place it at one end of a dough strip. Wrap the strip around the sausage, slightly overlapping the dough as you go, leaving a small gap about 1/3 of the way down for the ‘face.’ Use a second strip to continue wrapping if needed. Press the ends of the dough gently to seal them against the sausage.
  5. Arrange the wrapped mummies on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each one.
  6. In a small bowl, whisk the egg with 1 tablespoon of water until smooth. Using a pastry brush, gently brush the egg wash over the dough strips.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up and deeply golden brown.
  8. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and let the mummies cool on the pan for about 2 minutes. Dip a toothpick into the yellow mustard and dot two small dots onto the exposed sausage area to create the eyes.
  9. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, keep the puff pastry cold while cutting. Do not add mustard eyes before baking—they will dry out and lose color. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free puff pastry and check that sausages are gluten-free. For a dairy-free version, use vegan puff pastry and replace the egg wash with plant-based milk.
