This cozy slow cooker apple cider for two is the perfect fall drink, made with whole apples, orange, and warm spices. It’s simple to prepare, naturally sweetened, and fills your home with an irresistible aroma.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium apples (mixed varieties, such as Honeycrisp and Granny Smith)
  • 1 large orange
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup (or honey)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise (optional)
  • 4 cups water (filtered is best)
  • Pinch of salt
  • For garnish: extra cinnamon sticks, orange slices, star anise (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash the apples and orange thoroughly. Quarter the apples (no need to core). Cut the orange into thin rounds, about 1/4-inch thick.
  2. Place the apple quarters and orange slices in a 2- to 3-quart slow cooker. Add the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, and star anise (if using). Drizzle with maple syrup and add the pinch of salt. Pour in the water, ensuring the fruit is mostly submerged.
  3. Cover and cook on low for 4 hours or on high for 2 hours. Halfway through, gently stir with a wooden spoon.
  4. Turn off the slow cooker. Use a potato masher or the back of a wooden spoon to gently mash the softened fruit. Let steep, covered, for 10 to 15 minutes.
  5. Strain the cider through a fine-mesh strainer into a large bowl or heatproof pitcher, pressing gently on the solids. Discard the solids.
  6. Ladle the warm cider into mugs. Garnish with orange slices and fresh cinnamon sticks if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t skip the salt—it balances the sweetness. Strain while warm for easier handling. The cider tastes even better the next day. For a boozy version, stir in 2-3 tablespoons of bourbon or dark rum per mug after straining.
