A rich, creamy, and spiced hot chocolate made in the slow cooker, perfect for Halloween gatherings. This indulgent drink combines semi-sweet chocolate, warm spices, and a hint of cayenne for a cozy, magical treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk (1.4 liters)
  • 1 cup heavy cream (240 ml)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (340 grams)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (45 grams)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (100 grams)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract (10 ml)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Mini marshmallows (for serving, optional)

Instructions

  1. Lightly spray the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne pepper, and salt.
  3. Pour the milk and heavy cream into the slow cooker. Add the vanilla extract and whisk gently.
  4. Slowly add the dry ingredient mixture to the slow cooker while whisking constantly until smooth and no lumps remain.
  5. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.
  6. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours, stirring every 30 minutes, until the chocolate chips are melted and the mixture is smooth and steaming.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  8. Ladle into mugs and serve immediately with mini marshmallows or other toppings.

Notes

Do not cook on HIGH to avoid scorching. For a party, switch to ‘warm’ after 2 hours. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop or microwave.
