These spooky and delicious jalapeño poppers are wrapped in thin pastry strips to resemble mummies. They offer a perfect balance of creamy, spicy, and crunchy textures, making them an ideal appetizer for Halloween parties or weeknight snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12–16 medium jalapeño peppers
  • 8 oz full-fat cream cheese (block, softened)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese (freshly grated)
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 green onions (finely chopped)
  • 1 sheet phyllo dough or puff pastry (thawed)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 tbsp everything bagel seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash jalapeños, slice them in half lengthwise, and carefully scoop out seeds and membranes. Pat dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture.
  3. In a medium bowl, mix softened cream cheese, grated cheddar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and green onions until smooth.
  4. Spoon the cheese mixture into each jalapeño half, smoothing the top evenly.
  5. Cut phyllo or puff pastry into thin strips (approx. 1/2 inch wide). Keep phyllo covered with a damp towel to prevent drying.
  6. Wrap each filled pepper with a pastry strip, leaving small gaps to resemble mummy bandages. Trim excess pastry.
  7. Brush the pastry wraps generously with melted butter and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning if using.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is golden brown and crispy, and the cheese is bubbly.
  9. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Wear gloves when handling jalapeños to protect your hands from oils. Ensure peppers are completely dry before filling to prevent soggy bottoms. If using phyllo dough, keep it covered with a damp towel until ready to use to prevent cracking. For a milder version, remove all seeds and white ribs from the peppers.
