Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)
  • Mini marshmallows (for toppings bar)
  • Whipped cream (for toppings bar)
  • Caramel sauce (for toppings bar)
  • Chocolate syrup (for toppings bar)
  • Crushed candy canes or peppermint pieces (for toppings bar)
  • Halloween sprinkles (for toppings bar)
  • Candy corn (for toppings bar)
  • Crushed graham crackers or Oreo pieces (for toppings bar)
  • Chocolate shavings (for toppings bar)
  • Cinnamon sticks for stirring (for toppings bar)

Instructions

  1. Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the unsweetened cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into the crockpot. Turn it on low heat.
  4. Gradually add the cocoa-sugar mixture to the milk while whisking constantly until fully dissolved (about 2 minutes).
  5. Add both semi-sweet and milk chocolate chips, and the cinnamon stick if using. Stir well.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours, stirring occasionally if possible.
  7. After 2 hours, stir in the vanilla extract. Remove the cinnamon stick. Taste and adjust sweetness if needed.
  8. Turn the crockpot to the warm setting to keep the hot chocolate drinkable for hours.
  9. While the hot chocolate warms, arrange all toppings in small bowls with spoons for the toppings bar.
  10. Ladle the hot chocolate into mugs and let everyone customize their own cup.

Notes

For dairy-free, use full-fat oat milk and canned coconut cream. For a spiked adult version, add ½ cup of peppermint schnapps, Bailey’s Irish Cream, or bourbon to individual mugs. To make ahead, prepare the hot chocolate base up to 2 days in advance, cool, refrigerate, and reheat on low in the crockpot. If too thick, stir in extra warm milk; if too thin, cook on low uncovered for 20-30 minutes. Do not let it boil.
