This homemade cranberry orange sauce with fresh ginger is quick, easy, and bursting with bright citrus and warm spicy flavors. Perfect for holidays or everyday meals, it’s a crowd-pleaser that comes together in under 20 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 oz (340 g) fresh cranberries
  • ¾ cup (150 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (120 ml) fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries under cold water and pick out any stems or soft berries. Zest the orange before juicing it. Grate the fresh ginger using a microplane or fine grater. Set everything aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, add the fresh orange juice, water, and granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the fresh cranberries to the saucepan and stir. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce heat to low. Simmer for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally. After about 8 minutes, gently press some cranberries against the side of the pan with the back of a spoon to release their juices.
  4. Stir in the orange zest and grated fresh ginger. Simmer for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and let cool for 10-15 minutes. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Transfer to a serving bowl or glass jar. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.

Notes

For a more intense ginger flavor, add half the ginger at the beginning with the sugar and the other half at the end. The sauce will thicken as it cools, so don’t overcook it. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.
