These adorable turkey hand sugar cookies are a fun and budget-friendly Thanksgiving project that kids love to help make. With a soft, buttery texture and a cinnamon-sugar coating, they’re perfect for school parties or family baking sessions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (plus extra for sprinkling)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Assorted candy corn (about 10-12 per cookie)
  • Candy eyes
  • Orange and red gel food coloring
  • Mini chocolate chips (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, beating on low until just combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to ¼-inch thickness. Have a child press their hand gently into the dough to make an impression. Cut around the handprint with a sharp knife, leaving a ½-inch border. Transfer to prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until edges are just barely golden. Let cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. For the glaze, whisk together sifted powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth and thick but drizzle-able.
  10. Spread a thin layer of glaze over the palm area of each cookie. Arrange candy corn along the fingers for feathers. Use orange gel for the beak and red for the wattle. Press candy eyes into the glaze. Let set for about 20 minutes before serving.

Notes

Don’t skip chilling the dough—it prevents spreading. Use a light touch for the handprint to avoid flattening the dough. For best results, bake one sheet at a time in the center of the oven. The glaze can be made a day ahead and stored in the fridge.
