Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cans (14.5 oz each) cut green beans, drained
  • 2 cans (10.5 oz each) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions (for topping)
  • 1/3 cup crispy fried onions (for garnish)
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain the green beans in a colander for about 5 minutes.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together cream of mushroom soup, milk, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt (if using) until smooth.
  3. Place the drained green beans in a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Pour the soup mixture over the beans and stir gently to coat evenly.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours, until the sauce is bubbly and the beans are tender but still have a bite.
  5. About 15 minutes before serving, sprinkle 1 1/2 cups of crispy fried onions over the top. Do not stir. Cover and cook for another 10-15 minutes.
  6. Just before serving, sprinkle the remaining 1/3 cup of crispy onions on top for extra crunch. Serve hot directly from the slow cooker.

Notes

Add crispy onions at the very end to keep them crunchy. For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free cream of mushroom soup and unsweetened oat milk. For gluten-free, use certified gluten-free soup and crispy onions. The casserole can be assembled the night before and refrigerated; cook on low for 3-4 hours the next day. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 4 days; reheat in microwave or oven.
