This homemade cranberry orange relish with fresh ginger is a quick and easy side dish that’s bright, chunky, and alive with flavor. It takes about 20 minutes to make and is perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 ounces (340 grams) fresh cranberries
  • ¾ cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 large navel orange (zest and juice)
  • 1½-inch piece (about 20 grams) fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
  • ¼ cup (60 ml) water
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 small cinnamon stick (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the cranberries in a colander and pick out any stems or soft berries. Zest the orange to get about 1 tablespoon of zest, then juice the orange to get about ¼ cup of juice. Peel the ginger with a spoon and grate it finely.
  2. Add the cranberries, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, grated ginger, water, and a pinch of salt to a medium saucepan. If using, add the cinnamon stick and vanilla extract. Stir to combine.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a full, rolling boil. The cranberries will start to pop and the liquid will become bubbly and fragrant, about 5 minutes.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer gently, stirring occasionally, for 10-12 minutes. The relish will thicken and the cranberries will continue to break down. It’s done when it coats the back of a spoon and has a jam-like consistency.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat. If you used a cinnamon stick, remove it now. Let the relish cool in the pot for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a serving bowl or glass jar. It will continue to set as it cools.

Notes

The relish will thicken more as it cools, so don’t over-reduce it. It tastes even better the next day as flavors meld. Be careful not to taste immediately after cooking as it will be very hot. For a spiced version, add a cinnamon stick, 2 whole cloves, and a star anise while simmering. For a maple version, replace sugar with ½ cup pure maple syrup and reduce water to 2 tablespoons.
