This kid-friendly slow cooker mulled wine is a warm, spiced, non-alcoholic drink that fills your home with holiday aromas. Made with grape juice, apple cider, and whole spices, it’s incredibly easy to prepare and perfect for cozy family nights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups (960 ml) 100% grape juice (purple or red grape juice works best)
  • 2 cups (480 ml) apple cider (unfiltered if possible)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice (fresh-squeezed or store-bought)
  • 3 tablespoons (45 ml) honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) brown sugar (optional)
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 3 star anise pods
  • 1 teaspoon (5 g) whole allspice berries (or ½ teaspoon ground)
  • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise (or 1½ teaspoons vanilla extract added at the end)
  • 1 orange, sliced into thin rounds (for garnish)
  • Fresh cranberries (a handful, for garnish)
  • Extra cinnamon sticks (for stirring)

Instructions

  1. Prep your slow cooker: rinse and dry the insert.
  2. Combine the grape juice, apple cider, and orange juice in the slow cooker. Stir.
  3. Add the honey or maple syrup and brown sugar (if using). Stir until mostly dissolved. Taste and adjust sweetness.
  4. Tie the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, and allspice berries in a cheesecloth or muslin bag (or add loose). Drop the spice bundle into the juice mixture.
  5. If using a vanilla bean, split it lengthwise, scrape the seeds into the liquid, and drop the pod in. If using vanilla extract, wait until the end.
  6. Float orange slices and a handful of fresh cranberries on top.
  7. Cover and cook on low for 2-3 hours (or on high for 1-1½ hours). The liquid should be steaming hot but not boiling.
  8. Taste after 2 hours and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  9. Serve warm: ladle into mugs, avoiding the spice bundle or straining if loose spices were used. Garnish each mug with a fresh orange slice or cinnamon stick.

Notes

Don’t boil the drink; keep it steaming hot. Cloves are potent—start with 4 if unsure. For a deeper wine-like flavor, add ¼ cup pomegranate juice. Leftovers keep in the fridge for up to 5 days and can be frozen for up to 3 months. Reheat gently.
