Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 cups (190g) all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-processed recommended)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup (180ml) buttermilk (or whole milk + 1 tablespoon vinegar as substitute)
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) vegetable oil (neutral oils like canola or sunflower preferred)
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • About 1 teaspoon black gel food coloring
  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened (European-style preferred)
  • 3 cups (360g) powdered sugar, sifted
  • 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • A few drops orange gel food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black gel food coloring until smooth.
  4. Add buttermilk and white vinegar to wet ingredients and stir gently.
  5. Gradually fold dry ingredients into wet ingredients until just combined; batter should be smooth and glossy.
  6. Divide batter evenly into cupcake liners, filling each about two-thirds full.
  7. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  8. Cool cupcakes in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before frosting.
  9. To make orange buttercream, beat softened butter on medium speed for 2 minutes until creamy.
  10. Gradually add powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  11. Add fresh orange juice, orange zest, vanilla extract, salt, and optional orange gel food coloring.
  12. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes until light and fluffy. Adjust consistency with milk or powdered sugar as needed.
  13. Transfer buttercream to a piping bag fitted with a small round tip.
  14. Pipe a spiral starting from the center of each cupcake moving outward.
  15. Use a toothpick or skewer to drag lines from the center to edges to create a cobweb effect.
  16. Serve at room temperature or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Notes

Use gel food coloring for a deep black color without thinning the batter. Sift cocoa powder to avoid clumps. Use room temperature eggs and butter for better mixing. Practice piping cobwebs on parchment paper first. If frosting is too stiff, add a teaspoon of milk or orange juice; if too runny, add more powdered sugar.
