These quick apple dumplings with cinnamon sauce are the kind of recipe that makes you look like a hero without actually working like one. From start to table in under 45 minutes, with only about 15 minutes of active work, this dessert uses crescent roll dough and simple ingredients for a warm, comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Pinch of salt
  • Optional: 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Optional: Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease your baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Peel, core, and chop your apples into 8-10 chunks each, about 1 to 1.5 inches in size.
  3. In a small bowl, combine 1/2 cup of the granulated sugar with 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Set aside about 2 tablespoons of this mixture for sprinkling on top later.
  4. Open the can of crescent rolls and separate the dough into 8 triangles along the perforated lines.
  5. Place 2-3 apple chunks at the wide end of each crescent triangle. Sprinkle a tiny pinch of the cinnamon-sugar mixture over the apples. Roll the dough up starting from the wide end, tucking the sides in slightly. Place each dumpling seam-side down in your prepared baking dish.
  6. In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the 1/2 cup of butter. Stir in the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture, the 1/2 cup of water, the vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Whisk until combined.
  7. Pour the sauce evenly over the dumplings. Sprinkle the reserved 2 tablespoons of cinnamon-sugar over the tops. If using nuts, scatter them over now.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the sauce is bubbling. About halfway through, spoon some of the sauce over the tops to keep them moist.
  9. Let the dumplings cool in the dish for about 5 minutes. Serve warm, spooning extra sauce over each portion. A scoop of vanilla ice cream is recommended.

Notes

Don’t overfill the dough; 2-3 apple chunks per triangle is ideal. Seal the seams well to prevent leaking. Start checking for doneness at 25 minutes. Spoon sauce over dumplings halfway through baking for best results. Let rest 5 minutes before serving to allow sauce to thicken. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent dough. For dairy-free, use vegan butter and dairy-free crescent dough. Leftovers keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
