A dramatic and delicious Halloween cocktail featuring fresh blood orange juice, vodka, and sparkling water. This easy recipe creates a naturally spooky deep red drink that’s perfect for parties, with a tangy-sweet balance that’s genuinely refreshing.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4–5 medium blood oranges (to yield 1 cup fresh juice)
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup (homemade: 1/2 cup sugar + 1/2 cup water)
  • 1 cup vodka (about 8 ounces, mid-range like Tito’s or Smirnoff)
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda, cold
  • Ice cubes (large cubes preferred)
  • Optional garnishes: blood orange slices, fresh rosemary sprigs, frozen raspberries, or plastic vampire fangs

Instructions

  1. Juice the blood oranges: Roll each orange firmly on the counter, cut in half crosswise, and juice until you have 1 cup of fresh juice. Strain if desired (pulp is fine). Set aside.
  2. Make the simple syrup: Combine 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar dissolves (3-4 minutes). Do not boil vigorously. Remove from heat and cool completely.
  3. Combine the base: In a pitcher or measuring cup, mix 1 cup blood orange juice, 1/4 cup simple syrup, and 1 cup vodka. Stir well. Taste and adjust sweetness or tartness as desired.
  4. Chill the mixture (optional but recommended): Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to let flavors meld.
  5. Prepare the glasses: Fill each glass with ice cubes. For a fancy rim, rub a blood orange slice around the edge and dip in sugar (optional).
  6. Assemble and serve: Pour the chilled mixture over ice, filling each glass about two-thirds full. Top with about 1/4 cup sparkling water per glass. Stir gently. Garnish with a blood orange slice and/or rosemary sprig. Serve immediately.

Notes

For best results, chill all ingredients beforehand to minimize dilution. Freshly squeezed blood orange juice is essential for the best flavor and color. The base mixture (juice, syrup, vodka) can be made up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Add sparkling water only when serving to maintain fizz. For a non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with ginger ale or ginger beer.
