These spooky spider web chocolate crinkle cookies are the perfect Halloween treat, featuring a dramatic spider web effect created naturally with black cocoa powder. They are rich, fudgy, and surprisingly easy to make with simple ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 and 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup black cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup regular unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup powdered sugar (for rolling)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  2. Add the eggs and vanilla: Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then add the vanilla and beat until combined.
  3. Whisk the dry ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, regular cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt for at least 30 seconds.
  4. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. The dough will be very dark and sticky.
  5. Chill the dough: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight.
  6. Preheat and prepare: When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Pour powdered sugar into a small bowl.
  7. Shape and coat the cookies: Using a cookie scoop or spoon, portion out rounded tablespoons of dough. Roll each into a ball between your palms. Drop each ball into the powdered sugar and roll until completely coated. For a thicker crust, double-coat by rolling once, letting it sit for a minute, then rolling again.
  8. Bake: Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The cookies will look puffed and cracked when done; edges should be set but centers slightly underdone.
  9. Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial for the spider web effect. Use an oven thermometer to ensure accurate temperature. For best results, double-coat the dough balls in powdered sugar. The cookies taste even better on day two.
