A playful and spooky Halloween treat featuring crisp sugar cookies shaped like witch fingers with almond fingernails and icing blood. These cookies are easy to make, travel well, and are a crowd-pleaser for parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Whole blanched almonds (for fingernails)
  • 1 cup icing sugar (powdered sugar)
  • 1–2 tablespoons milk
  • Red gel food coloring

Instructions

  1. Cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar in a large bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Mix on low speed until combined, then increase to medium and beat for another minute. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Pour dry ingredients into the wet mixture and mix on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper during this time.
  5. Roll portions of dough (about 1 tablespoon) into 3-inch cylinders, tapering one end. Press an almond into the wider end to create a fingernail. Place on baking sheets, leaving 2 inches between them.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes until pale gold. Let cool on the sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. Mix powdered sugar and milk to create a thick but pipeable icing. Divide icing; leave half white and add red food coloring to the other half.
  8. Pipe white icing along knuckle lines to mimic wrinkles. Let set briefly, then use red icing to add blood drips. Allow icing to dry completely.

Notes

Chilling the dough is crucial to prevent spreading and maintain the finger shape. Use gel food coloring for vibrant icing that doesn’t thin out the mixture. Cookies can be made ahead and frozen; bake from frozen adding 2 minutes to bake time.
